Interactive AI in Student Life: What Students and Universities Need to Understand

A new part of everyday learning

Interactive AI is no longer a future topic for higher education. It is already part of everyday student life. For many students, tools such as ChatGPT and other conversational AI systems now sit alongside search engines, grammar tools, lecture recordings and online learning platforms. They are being used to explain difficult ideas, summarise long texts, improve writing, plan revision, practice presentations and prepare for interviews. In other words, AI is not waiting outside the university gate. It is already inside the student workflow. 

That shift happened at remarkable speed. The 2025 HEPI and Kortext Student Generative AI Survey found that 92% of students were using AI in some form, up from 66% in 2024. It also found that 88% had used generative AI for assessments, up from 53% the year before. This is no longer occasional experimentation. It is close to mainstream student behaviour. 

For universities, that changes the conversation. The question is no longer whether AI is arriving. The question is what kind of academic culture it is creating. Used well, interactive AI can help students learn, practise and build confidence. Used badly, it can weaken independent thinking while making work look more polished. That is why institutions need a more mature response than either fear or blind enthusiasm. 

The policy gap is not the same as the skills gap

One of the most striking findings in the HEPI survey is the difference between policy visibility and practical support. While 80% of students said their institution had a clear AI policy, only 36% said they had received support to develop AI skills. Even though perceptions of staff confidence improved, only 42% said staff were well equipped to help them with AI. That suggests many students know AI matters, but far fewer feel they have been taught how to use it properly. 

This matters because a policy cannot do the whole job. A policy may tell students what is allowed, what is restricted and what needs to be declared, but it does not automatically build judgement. Students still need to learn how to ask useful questions, how to verify outputs, how to spot weak or false information and how to decide when AI is helping them think versus when it is doing too much of the thinking for them. Jisc’s 2025 report makes this clear. Students do not only want rules. They want guidance, examples and support that feel practical within their own course context. 

This is where many institutions are still behind. When student behaviour moves faster than staff confidence and teaching practice, students often create their own rules. Some become over cautious and avoid AI completely, even when there are responsible ways to use it. Others use it heavily but without much reflection. The result is inconsistency, anxiety and uncertainty, which is not a good foundation for fair academic practice. 

AI is changing the workflow, not just the final answer

A common mistake in this debate is to treat AI as if it only affects the final submission. In reality, interactive AI is changing the whole workflow around study. Jisc reports that students are using AI to unpack assignment briefs, explain reading material, generate notes, build revision questions, rehearse speaking tasks, organise study plans and prepare job application materials. That means AI is not only appearing at the point of writing. It appears at the beginning, middle and end of the learning process. 

There is real value in that. AI can reduce the time a student spends feeling stuck. It can provide another explanation when the first one does not land. It can create a low pressure space for rehearsal and revision. It can also support accessibility. Jisc notes that disabled and neurodivergent students often describe AI tools as helpful for confirming understanding, improving structure and building confidence. 

However, that does not mean every use is educationally strong. A faster workflow is not always a deeper one. If a student uses AI to clarify a concept after making an attempt, that may support real learning. If they use AI to avoid the attempt in the first place, something more important may be lost. The educational issue is not simply whether AI is present. It is whether the student still owns the cognitive effort. 

That distinction is becoming central. Universities have always supported students with tools, resources and feedback. AI is different because it can move from support into substitution very quickly. A student can go from asking for help to outsourcing key parts of interpretation, reasoning and communication without always noticing where the line has shifted.

A polished answer is not always evidence of learning

This is the hardest truth in the AI debate, and perhaps the most important. AI can improve performance very quickly. It can make writing cleaner, make structure clearer and make ideas sound more confident. But performance is not the same as learning. A stronger looking answer does not always mean a stronger learner produced it. 

The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 is especially useful here. It argues that generative AI can support learning when it is guided by clear teaching principles, but it can also create what some describe as false mastery, where performance improves without equivalent gains in understanding or long term skill. That warning should land strongly in higher education. Universities are not just assessing whether a student can produce something impressive on screen. They are supposed to be developing people who can think, explain, judge and apply knowledge independently. 

Students are starting to recognise this tension themselves. Jisc reports that some students who initially relied on AI heavily later felt their work quality had declined and their grades had fallen, leading them to rethink how they were using these tools. That is an important signal. It shows that students are not always blindly enthusiastic. Many can already see that convenience can come at the cost of deeper understanding. 

The more useful distinction, then, is not between AI use and non use. It is between shortcut use and learning use. Shortcut use asks AI to take over too early. Learning use keeps the student active, reflective and responsible throughout the process.

Fairness is now a design issue

The fairness conversation around AI is often reduced to cheating, but that is too narrow. Fairness is increasingly about design. It is about whether the educational environment makes responsible behaviour realistic, understandable and consistent.

The HEPI survey helps show why this issue is complicated. Students say they are drawn to AI for practical reasons. Fifty one percent use it to save time, 50% use it to improve the quality of their work, 40% use it to get instant support and 32% use it to get personalised support. These are not trivial reasons. They reflect the reality of pressure, deadlines and the appeal of immediate help. 

At the same time, students are not relaxed about the risks. The same survey found that 53% worry about being accused of cheating, 51% worry about false results or hallucinations and 37% worry about biased outputs. That is a revealing combination. Students are attracted to the usefulness of AI, but uneasy about its reliability and the consequences of getting its use wrong. 

This is why institutional design matters so much. If expectations differ across modules, if staff vary in confidence, if access to paid tools creates hidden advantages, and if assessment mainly rewards polished final outputs, then universities may unintentionally reward strategic AI use more than genuine learning. Jisc’s report reflects these concerns clearly. Students want more consistency, more open discussion and a fairer environment where they are not left to guess what acceptable use looks like. 

A mature institutional response therefore cannot rely only on detection and punishment. It also has to improve clarity, staff confidence, assessment design and AI literacy. In other words, fairness is not only about policing misconduct. It is about creating an environment where good judgement is teachable and visible.

What responsible student use actually looks like

For students, the most useful guidance is often practical rather than abstract. Responsible use starts with a simple principle: 

  1. Attempt first. 

Students should read, think, plan and make a genuine first effort before asking AI to step in. That first attempt matters because it keeps the student present in the learning process.

  1. Ask for coaching rather than completion. 

A student who asks AI to critique their paragraph, explain a weak point, generate practice questions or test their understanding is using the tool very differently from a student who asks it to complete the task. One approach keeps them active. The other risks making them passive. Jisc’s research strongly supports this more guided, critical and practical use of AI. 

  1. Verify everything. 

AI can sound confident and still be wrong. Students need to check facts, references, quotations and claims. That is a study skill, but it is also becoming a workplace skill. Trusting an output simply because it arrived quickly is not professional judgement.

  1. Be transparent. 

Students should get used to being clear about how AI supported their work, where that is required or appropriate. In the long run, this habit matters beyond university. Many employers will increasingly expect people to justify how AI was used, what was checked and why the final output can be trusted.

  1. Remove the tool and test yourself. 

Can you still explain the concept on your own? Can you still answer the question verbally? Can you still apply the same idea in a slightly different situation? If not, the tool may have improved the output without strengthening the person behind it.

Why this matters for employability

This conversation becomes even more important when viewed through the lens of employability. Students are not only using AI to survive university. They are also trying to prepare for a labour market that is being changed by AI at the same time.

Jisc says concern about future employability is one of the biggest anxieties students have about AI. That concern is understandable. OECD evidence shows that around one third of vacancies across 10 OECD countries are in occupations highly exposed to AI, and the figure for the United Kingdom is 45%. These are often jobs that require above average levels of education, which means many graduate roles are directly touched by this shift. 

But employability should not be reduced to simple AI fluency. The OECD’s labour market analysis makes a more important point. Most workers who will be exposed to AI will not need specialist AI skills. What remains highly valuable in AI exposed occupations are management, business process, social, emotional and digital skills. In the OECD analysis, 72% of vacancies in highly AI exposed occupations required at least one management skill and 67% required at least one business process skill, while more than half required social, emotional and digital skills. 

That tells us something important. The future is not simply rewarding people who can use AI tools. It is rewarding people who can use them with judgement, context and trustworthiness. Students still need communication, critical thinking, subject knowledge, ethical awareness and the ability to defend decisions. In fact, these may become even more important as basic output generation becomes easier.

For an organisation such as the Institute of Analytics, this is where the professional development angle becomes especially relevant. Students and early career professionals will increasingly need to prove not only that they can produce work, but that they can think through it, explain it and stand behind it. In that kind of environment, reflective evidence of skill, applied projects and visible proof of judgement become more important, not less.

The real challenge for universities

The real challenge for higher education is not to remove AI from student life. That is not realistic. Nor is it especially helpful. The stronger challenge is to design education in a way that keeps the student learning while AI becomes more common around them.

That means teaching AI literacy explicitly, not treating it as background knowledge. It means helping staff feel more confident in course specific guidance. It means designing assessments that look not only at the final answer, but also at reasoning, process, reflection and the ability to defend work independently. It means making expectations clear enough that fairness does not depend on guesswork.

Most of all, it means keeping sight of what education is for. Universities are not simply there to produce polished assignments. They are there to develop capable people. If AI supports that goal, it is useful. If it undermines that goal while making work look better on the surface, then institutions need to respond more carefully.

Final thought

Interactive AI is now part of student life. That much is clear. The harder question is whether it will become a tool that strengthens learning or a shortcut that weakens it.

The answer will depend on how students use it, how staff guide it and how universities design around it. If higher education gets this right, AI can support confidence, accessibility, practice and preparation for a changing workplace. If it gets it wrong, students may leave with more polished outputs but thinner capability underneath. 

That is why this is no longer a side conversation. It is now central to how we think about learning, fairness and graduate readiness.
